UBP draws up wish-list to make Island?s roads safer
Opposition Transport spokesman Jamahl Simmons has called for a raft of measures to improve road safety including introducing speed cameras and a points system for traffic offences.
His comments come in the wake of three recent road deaths, including two tourists who died from bike accidents.
Government have promised a meeting this week on road safety.
Mr. Simmons welcomed this but said far more needed to be done.
?How many times has Dr. Brown promised that they were going to begin addressing road safety?
?Whenever there has been a spate of tragic road deaths the Minister has come out and promised he would begin introducing initiatives address the problem.
?Yet still the public is forced to wait while yet another promise goes unfulfilled.?
*Raise the manpower levels of the traffic division of the Bermuda Police service to insure that they can perform their duties effectively
*Introduce speed cameras. This was promised by Dr. Brown a number of years ago and has never been delivered
*Introduce tougher penalties for road offences such as drunk driving and introduce a vehicular manslaughter law
*Introduce a points system for licenses to act as a disincentive for repeat offences of traffic violations
*Analyse high accident areas and identify areas for improvement
*Work with cycle liveries to insure that training and other procedures prior to rental are properly and consistently implemented
*Expand the Project Ride Program to become a part of the Senior Secondary schools? curriculum.
*Work with driving instructors to review the current license tests and insure that they are an accurate gauge of a driver?s ability
*Introduce a graduated license program
Mr. Simmons added: ?We recognise that accidents can and will happen.
?Government?s role should be to insure there is an active police presence as a deterrent to road offences and to facilitate the smooth running of traffic.
?Government must insure the necessary regulatory and legislative infrastructure is in place to protect our people and effectively punish offenders.?
