Opposition Leader Grant Gibbons unveiled his shadow cabinet, naming all but one of his winning MPs, Trevor Moniz, to key posts.

Dr. Gibbons explained that Mr. Moniz was off the Island and could not be contacted but the public will be told of his post soon.

“Our team consists of experienced members as well as newly elected members who will bring certainly new ideas and new energy,” Dr. Gibbons said.

“I'm confident that this group of men and women will bring the same unity, the same drive and the same commitment that the people of Bermuda saw during the election campaign.

“They will put the interest of the people of Bermuda first and they will be a strong voice for good government.”

Dr. Gibbons added that the team will continue to promote the United Bermuda Party's plans as spelled out in its electoral platform.

“Having received 48 percent of the popular vote it's important that we continue to be responsive and accountable to all Bermudians.”

He said he had had the “benefit of enormous talent” in selecting the shadow ministers and had decided to split some Ministries between more than one MP.

Louise Jackson, the new representative for Pembroke South West, was named shadow Minister for Community Affairs and the party's spokesperson for seniors.

Seniors were a “very important part of the population that certainly deserve a lot more attention than they have been getting over the last few years,” said Dr. Gibbons.

“I'm sure Louise will be a strong voice for seniors in the House.”

The Youth and Sport portfolio goes to former triathlete Jon Brunson, another first time MP, while Cole Simons who held the post prior to the election has landed Environment.

And Neville Darrell, also a first time MP, is to speak for the party on Education.

John Barritt hangs on to responsibility for Legislative Affairs, with the Justice and Legislative Affairs portfolio and will shadow new Attorney General Paula Cox.

Dr. Gibbons decided to create a new portfolio dedicated to housing which will be held by Wayne Furbert, a former Housing Minister.

“Housing has been an enormous issue throughout the general election and is certainly one of those overriding social issues which is putting a lot of stress and a lot of pain on many Bermudian families.

“It's an issue that we've had lots of plans and ideas and I'm sure that Wayne will continue to be an articulate spokesperson and advance some of the ideas and suggestions that we've had,” Dr. Gibbons added.

And former Shadow Minister for Home Affairs Patricia Gordon Pamplin will take over the Works and Engineering portfolio.

“There are some huge issues here and some very important unanswered questions - on Berkeley and certainly questions about what happened to the $700,000 bond,” said Dr. Gibbons.

“In addition to that there are issues of tendering which must be faced squarely by the incoming government.”

First time MP, Suzanne Holshouser, will take on the Women's Affairs portfolio. Jamahl Simmons takes on the Shadow Transport portfolio, while Dr. Gibbons, Michael Dunkley and David Dodwell will continue to shadow the Finance Minister, Health and Family Services Minister and Tourism Minister respectively.

Veteran UBP politician Maxwell Burgess will replace Mrs. Gordon Pamplin at Labour and Home Affairs.

Mr. Moniz will likely become Shadow Minister for Telecommunications and E-Commerce, which has not been assigned yet.

Appointments to the Senate, House leader and House whip posts are expected to be named soon.
