UK paper speculates Tony & Cherie Blair will buy a home here
With his vast array of contacts among the rich and famous, it's anybody guess where British Prime Minister Tony Blair might decide to buy himself a holiday home.
But the latest speculation — suggesting Mr. Blair and his wife Cherie are considering buying a home here in Bermuda — should come as no surprise, according to real estate agents.
They say the Island holds everything the Prime Minister could want — beautiful views, glamorous beaches, an enviable climate and an almost unique level of privacy.
The rumours, circulating in the British press, came after Mr. Blair was spotted being treated to a fishing trip by leading Bermuda-based lawyer, his family friend Justin Williams.
Mr. Blair's latest holiday has been in Miami, while previous excursions have taken him to Barbados and Sardinia.
Yet real estate agents say Bermuda has much to offer for any well-known personality who wants somewhere to get away from it all.
Barbara Sleeter, director of Property Group, said: "The main thing is that Bermuda is low key. Famous people don't have people clambering all over them like they would in other resort-type places.
"People like that find they can have a bit of a holiday here without getting stressed out by other people."
Becky Paris, sales associate at Rego Sotheby's International Realty, added: "Why wouldn't anyone want to buy a home here?
"We are friendly, creative and sophisticated, the country is beautiful and there's a wonderful climate. All of us are privileged to call Bermuda our home.
"With the current value of sterling versus the dollar, there's never been a better time for European interest in Bermuda."
Mr. Blair was taken on a four-hour expedition on Mr. Williams' 30-foot motor yacht Knot Guilty.
The Mail on Sunday pointed out Mr. Williams' clients included Capital G, which is involved in mortgage lending as well as services to the international insurance industry.
It claimed this had sparked rumours the Prime Minister and his wife were thinking about purchasing a home on the Island.
Mr. Williams, 41, was first linked to the Prime Minister in 2004, when a snappily-dressed Mr. Blair was sighted on the bow of a luxury cabin cruiser owned by the lawyer as he took a holiday in Bermuda with Cherie and three of their children.
At the end of his week-long trip, Mr. Blair praised the Island for allowing himself, Cherie and their four children such privacy during their holiday.
He said he would love to return, and members of the family have since made a number of trips back.
