W&EMinister fails to give Berkeley completion date

Works and Engineering Minister Ashfield DeVent is refusing to reveal when the trouble-hit Berkeley project will be complete.

And the UBP?s spokesman for the Ministry, Patricia Gordon Pamplin is urging her opposite number to make the timeline for the completion of the school public.

Mrs. Gordon Pamplin said she had asked both Mr. Devent and Education Minister Terry Lister when the project would be complete during the Budget debate in the House of Assembly last week ? and both Ministers refused to answer.

Attempts throughout the week by to get a definitive answer from the Minister also failed. Although Mr. DeVent did say that some classrooms would be handed over to the Education Ministry in May, he was not prepared to say when construction at the site will be complete.

After repeated requests, a spokesman for the Ministry last night would only say:

?He has given you his answer. That is as much information as he can give out at this time.?

Mrs. Gordon Pamplin said: ?Everything is extremely nebulous. It appears they have the attitude that we?ll tell you when you need to know.

?I requested of the Minister of Education whether he had been advised by Works and Engineering when the effective completion date would be,? she said. ?He never responded.?

Mrs. Gordon also expressed concern at the length of time the Education Ministry will have to get classrooms furnished before the start of the new school year in September.

And she highlighted the fact that, while Government had previously stated that the bulldozers would be off site by September, students would in fact be starting classes while building work continued.

?It is certainly on a piecemeal basis,? she said.

Yesterday Mr. Lister dismissed Mrs. Gordon Pamplin?s concerns. He did admit that the design and technology area of the school will not be completely outfitted by September 5, but added that the work being done ?will not be disruptive to students?.

In fact, a media tour of the site is being arranged which will allow the media to visualise what ?work? will have to be done after September 5, Mr. Lister said. That tour is expected to take place soon.

?I?m not sure what the big deal is there,? he said. ?Government also said the school would be ready in September, 2004 and it is not. We can?t go back ? we have to move ahead.?
