White Hill Field sale approved
Parliament on Friday approved the purchase of White Hill Field from Gosling Brothers Limited for $1 million.
The Opposition backed the proposal, saying it was well worth the money and that Government should make sure that negative elements in the area are addressed.
The property comprises some four acres of land, a detached residence and the Somerset Bridge Recreation Club clubhouse.
Introducing the proposal, Legislative Affairs Minister Michael Scott said Government had readily agreed to continue with an arrangement which gave life interest to the current tenant of the residence at 49 Middle Road.
Government already owns an adjacent property, and the purchase would bring its total holdings at White Hill Field to about six acres.
MPs from both sides of the House agreed that the Goslings were community minded in enabling the sale to Government and insisting the Middle Road tenant, a senior citizen continue to have life interest.
Mr. Scott said the clubhouse was in poor condition and would need renovation.
The approval now means that the Works Ministry can finalise the deal which had already been given the go-ahead by Cabinet.
MPs raved about the rich heritage of the club which has been a sporting and recreational centre for over 50 years.
But there was widespread concern about "negative activities" which have been going on in the area, and the Opposition demanded to know what Government's plans were to ensure it was developed into a "pristine" environment.
Education Minister and Sandys South MP Terry Lister said that in the last few years both the club management and the Police Service had made a significant effort to police the area.
He added that more lighting was being installed and the Communities that Care programme which was underway in Hamilton Parish would be started in the area next.
"We want to end up with the Somerset Bridge Cricket field being recognised as one of the best fields on the Island."
He added that the purchase would only enhance the relationship between the club and the community.
Sport Minister Dale Butler said that his Ministry had been encouraging clubs to develop proper business plans and a vision so that they can move away from having solely a recreational function.
And Mr. Scott said the focus had been on de-emphasising alcohol consumption and "a refocus on healthier activity."
