Why has my attacker not been apprehended?

A Pembroke woman is upset and frustrated because two weeks after she robbed on a Hamilton street, the man who attacked her still has not been apprehended.

The woman, who requested that her identity not be revealed, said that just before 8 a.m. on September 7, a man approached her from behind on Church Street and reached into her handbag.

Determined to thwart his actions, she said she struggled with him, but to no avail.

"He started to run, so I grabbed his shirt, and I ended up on the ground," she said. "He then ran off."

Apart from a few lacerations on her arm, the woman said she escaped serious injury.

According to the victim, two men came to her assistance, one of whom said he knew the perpetrator frequented the area often.

She said when Police attended the scene, officers searched for the man on foot, but to no avail.

Later that morning, she said, a man who is familiar with the area, told her that he knew the robber and gave his name to her.

"I called the Police immediately and passed on the information," she said.

While she said she was not positive that the name given to her was in fact the right one, she emphasised that she would definitely recognise the man if she saw him again.

The woman said that although she has worked in Hamilton for many years, she did not feel comfortable anymore when she is walking the streets - even in broad daylight.

"I'm not paranoid, but I do feel uneasy," she said. "I lived in the States for several years and didn't feel like this."

And although she said she believed an arrest was imminent, she said she was disappointed the man still had not been apprehended.

She told The Royal Gazette: "I'm surprised that it's taken this long."

When she spoke to this paper again yesterday, she said the situation still had not changed, since the man she named as her assailant did not attack her.

"On Saturday, the Police called me and said they had the man but when I went to identify him, he was not the man who stole my wallet," she said.

"I couldn't lie and say it was him."

So all she can do now is wait until the right man is brought to justice.

"Who knows how long it will be?" she asked.

But Police spokesman Dwayne Caines assured The Royal Gazette that the robbery was being looked into.

"All incidents reported to the Police are taken very seriously and will be dealt with in the appropriate manner,' he said.

"Inquiries into this specific incident are ongoing," he said.
