Will Island host the Grand Slam event? PGA of America keeps us all guessing
The PGA of America has declined to confirm or deny whether Bermuda will host next year?s Grand Slam event, which is expected to include superstar Tiger Woods.
The golf association is keeping everyone guessing where the exclusive four-man tournament will be held in 2007 after confirming that the Hawaiian hosts for the past 12 years have been informed that other resorts are under consideration.
Former Tourism Minister Ewart Brown held a press conference last Wednesday in which he indicated that final negotiations to secure the prestigious event were due to be completed soon to bring the event to the Island next October and again in 2008. He mentioned a $1.5 million guarantee from Government to lure the golfing spectacle from Hawaii.
No-one from the PGA of America was available to comment until late last week when spokesman Julius Mason said: ?We?ve enjoyed a great 12-year run in Hawaii.
Two years ago we informed our partners, the Grand Hyatt and Poipu Bay Golf Course (on the Hawaiian island of Kauai), that we would explore other site options for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
?There are a number of resorts that have expressed interest in hosting the PGA Grand Slam of Golf but at this stage we are not ready to discuss 2007. We should have more information to share with you next month.?
The other resorts that have expressed an interest are Las Vegas and unspecified locations in the Caribbean and South Western US.
The PGA Grand Slam is an end-of-season showdown between the winners of The Masters, US Open, British Open and the PGA Championships.
The Mid Ocean Golf Club is expected to be the venue for the event should it come to Bermuda. Last week Mid Ocean general manager Bryan Mewett confirmed that, to his knowledge, the contract to bring the Grand Slam to Bermuda was practically sealed.
News that Kauai might lose its big sporting event was reported in the Hawaiian newspaper Garden Island on Friday with officials of the Grand Hyatt and Poipu Bay, which host the event, saying nothing.
However, Poipu Bay?s director of golf Craig Sassada, told the newspaper: ?If there is any kind of official announcement it would not come from any other source than the PGA of America. I don?t think anything?s final because none of us here know anything about it.?
This year?s Grand Slam is being held at Poipu Bay next month.
