?You don?t have to answer to anybody?

Geography may seem like an unusual reason to fight, especially in a 22-square-mile Island, however, to those involved in the dispute between ?town? and ?country? it is all very real. talked to a 26-year-old black man who understands youth culture in Bermuda.

?Jason?, who spoke on condition of anonymity, admitted he has seen the inside of a jail cell and was not surprised the statistics showed very few white people being incarcerated.

?There?s mostly all black people in jail. There?s probably like ten white people in there. And most of the white people they lock up are foreigners,? he said.

Jason was 15 when he started hanging out with older men in his neighbourhood, who taught him about street life.

According to him there is a lot of history in the rivalry between the ?Town?? areas in Pembroke and ?Country?? from Paget westward.

But when interviewed last year, he attributed the escalated violence in the summer of 2005 to the restructured education system and the introduction of mega-schools CedarBridge Academy and the Berkeley Institute.

?If they would have had the school system like how it was back in the day instead of these big schools like CedarBridge, none of this would have happened. When they made CedarBridge all hell broke loose,? he said.

There are differences in character when it comes to ?Town? guys who typically live in the fast lane and ?Country? guys who are more relaxed, explained Jason.

Constantly being exposed to the wealth in Hamilton, it is no surprise when he said ?Town? guys are more ?caught up in the money?.

There is a constant competition between ?Town? and ?Country?, whether it is over money, success in the drug trade, girls or simply reputation, with both sides competing to become the ?hardest?, he said.

Today many young black men in Bermuda are using the drug trade to get ahead financially when a regular 9 to 5 job fails them.

?You get more money,? he said. ?You don?t have to answer to anybody. You can wake up whenever you want, knock off whenever you like. I can work eight hours a day and make $160, but when you sell drugs you can make $1,600.?

Jason noted the drug trade was fast money, but there are also the risks of getting caught by Police, which make it a dangerous job.

Young men often band together in ?gangs? ? which becomes a second family ? when parents are not actively involved in young men?s lives.

?On average, either their mamas are on drugs or their daddies are on drugs or they stay with their friends,? Jason said.

He said that young people in these groups often get into trouble because there is no other way to amuse themselves.

?There?s nothing for us to do in Bermuda. All there is to do is sit on the wall, smoke weed, talk s**t and call girls around,? he said.

Jason also maintained that it was the younger people starting the trouble, he said: ?It?s from what the older people told them. Those guys just go around robbing people.

?But they wouldn?t come from Paget stop lights down, guys down there are more serious,? he said about a young group of boys causing disturbance in the ?Town? area.

While Jason said he doesn?t start fights, he admitted that he fights when he has to.

?Don?t come to me and disrespect me and put your hands on me,? he said.

Gang members will often do anything to protect their group members, which is why violence often involves several men, rather than one-on-one fights.

?I am not gonna watch my ace boy or my cousin die right in front of me,? Jason said.

Fighting is just one of the ways guys try to prove their strength to others, they want to gain acceptance and make a name for themselves within the community.

Jason also said young men will retaliate in order to keep themselves in high repute: ?Say I get in a fight. Next time I see the guy I?m gonna chop him in the head or stab him?.

Throughout history, violence has had the power to bring about change within society. Jason agreed and said: ?Sometimes violence solves everything?.

As a young black man, Jason believes there is little hope for the future. He said: ?It?s never gonna end unless someone gets shot real bad or hurt real bad.?

As men age, differences between ?Town? and ?Country? don?t disappear, he said: ?You don?t grow out of it, but you find other ways to deal with it.?
