More than 150 people left their cars or bikes at home on Burn Fat Not Fuel day.

Releasing the figures yesterday, the Ministry of Health said those taking part last Friday burned about 112,000 calories between them, amounting to 410 calories each — the equivalent of two baked potatoes.

In total, 742 people registered for the event, and 275 reported their activity for the day, four fifths of whom were women; 108 left their cars at home, while 50 left their bikes behind.

Three percent ran or jogged to work, eight percent cycled, 31 percent walked and 59 percent used public transport.

The Ministry's press release states people who normally lead "sedentary lifestyles" were able to add a little physical activity to their day, burning up to 100 calories.

However, those who engaged in vigorous activity burned as much as 700 calories. Even more impressively than those who burned off the equivalent of two baked potatoes, the vigorous exercisers burned off the equivalent of a takeout cheeseburger and fries.

In addition, thanks to people leaving their vehicles at home, Bermuda saved an estimated 48 gallons or 192 litres of fuel.
