$3,500 fine after cocaine and nail gun cartridges discovered

Jerome Dublin, 28, of Glebe Road, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to possession of drug equipment and ammunition when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.

The court heard from Crown counsel Nicole Smith that on January 16, Police attended Dublin's house with a search warrant.

When they arrived, he was standing outside his door. Police informed him that they had a warrant to search his home as part of Operation Safer Streets.

During their search Police found a black plastic bag containing two pieces of glass with residue on them, wrapped inside a black and white handkerchief.

Police also found 16-millimetre live blank cartridges. Dublin said: "Those are for a dry wall gun."

He was subsequently arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station. Police later confirmed the white residue on the glass was cocaine and that the 16-millimetre cartridges were for a Hilti Nail Gun and that he does not have a license to carry such equipment.

When Magistrate Khamisi Tokumbo asked Dublin if he had anything to say he said: "I went to a Christmas party for this construction job and I was helping out. I didn't know it was illegal to have the gun."

He added: "I was given the plastic bag but I didn't know what it contained."

Dublin has previous drug related convictions.

He was fined $3,000 for possession of the ammunition and $500 for the drugs.
