Tatem set to get new principal

Education chiefs are assessing applications for a new principal at TN Tatem Middle School.

The deadline for applications for the position — which starts in September — was Monday.

The Ministry of Education advertised for teachers with at least ten years experience, three of them in a senior administrative position, and with a master's degree in educational administration or similar.

The previous principal at the Warwick school — formerly called Spice Valley Middle — was Dawnelle Walker. Acting principal is Francine McMahon.

Bike rider breaks leg

A 22-year-old Pembroke man suffered a broken left leg after his motorcycle collided with a car. The car driver, a 48-year-old Hamilton Parish woman, was left uninjured.

Police said the accident happened on Tuesday around 8.10 p.m. on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the junction with Cable Hill.

It appears that the car was travelling east on North Shore Road and the motorcycle was travelling in the opposite direction when the car attempted to make a right hand turn, resulting in the vehicles colliding.

The motorcycle was damaged extensively.

Empty box warning

The Bermuda Police Service is again reminding residents not to leave empty boxes outside their homes – showing what they have just bought.

It comes after Police noticed an increase in the theft of expensive items and electronic equipment from homes around the Island, such as flat screen TVs, laptop computers and jewellery.

Police said in a press release: "(Residents should) close their curtains at night and contact Police immediately if any suspicious individuals or vehicles are seen in their neighbourhoods.

"Also, we are encouraging members of the public to keep a copy of the serial numbers for all the items they have purchased, so that in the event they are stolen and later recovered, the items can be returned to their rightful owners.

"In addition, we are advising all residents not to let anyone into their homes that they do not know; unless they can verify the person's purpose for being there and/or the company they work for."

If in doubt, Police say, people should challenge the individual or individuals to show some form of identification and you should contact the company they claim to work for directly, to ascertain whether or not their claims are legitimate.

Thieves steal TVs

A thief made off with a 20- inch Sylvania flat screen TV from a Friswells Lane, Pembroke residence.

The victims told Police that the burglary appeared to have taken place between 7.50 a.m. and 5.45 p.m. on Tuesday when the home was unoccupied.

A Knapton Estates Road, Smith's Parish resident who travelled overseas, arrived home on Tuesday to discover someone had broken in and taken his black 54-inch Samsung TV, Police said.
