Bottom Line Watch the video report
It was the major news story of 2007.
Throughout the month of June, the Bermuda public was focused squarely on the legal battle between the media, and Attorney General Phil Perinchief along with Police Commissioner George Jackson.
The media were fighting injunctions filed by the Attorney General and the Police Commissioner in Bermuda's highest courts, injunctions that had effectively stopped the publication of what was a politically sensitive story.
The Bottom Line Magazine, which is available today, looks closely at the judgments of Chief Justice Richard Ground and the Court of Appeal, in a detailed report on these senior judges' extensive description of the law that governs press freedoms, much of which is in print for the first time in this month's magazine.
Written by Scott Neil, the story describes the battle as the media fought in Bermuda's highest courts for the right to publish information related to a Police probe said to have involved $8 million tax-payers' dollars in connection with alleged misconduct at the Bermuda Housing Corporation.
But it was Police investigations into top politicians including Premier Dr. Ewart Brown that captured the public's attention.
Scott Neil describes the story himself on The Royal Gazette's website video clip. Find it at www.theroyalgazette.com
Also in Bottom Line, the US Government has not yet decided whether it will continue to provide a terrorism insurance 'backstop', as it has since 9/11, or if it will allow the legislation governing the backstop ‚ the Terrorism Risk Assurance Act ‚ to end this year. Scott Neil reports on the reaction of the Bermuda reinsurance world to this looming deadline.
Montpelier Re has moved into a new suite of offices on Pitts Bay Road. Heather Wood describes their elegant new surroundings in this month's Office Space, along with an extensive photography by Charles Anderson.
From Monaco to New Orleans, this issue of the magazine provides a complete run-down of the year's reinsurance conferences. Roger Crombie looks at what's happening, where and when they will be.
