Ex-girlfriend: 'It's not enough'

The woman who killed Edward (Sleepy) Dill should be sentenced to jail, according to the mother of one of his children.

A jury found Andrina Smith guilty of manslaughter over the stabbing at her Devonshire home in 2006, but cleared her of murder on Monday.

Smith — who has a young baby by Mr. Dill — was taken away in a prison van as angry members of his family shouted at hers in dramatic scenes outside Supreme Court.

Wendi Francis — mother of another of Mr. Dill's seven children — said immediately after the verdict: "I'm irritated. It's not enough. I thought I'd be happy it's guilty, but it's not enough."

Expanding on her views yesterday, she told The Royal Gazette: "I think everybody's still in shock... we've not sat down and talked about it but I think if you're guilty you need to go and do your time."

Ms. Francis does not accept the picture Smith painted of Mr. Dill, as a violent man who was involved in drugs. She said he treated her well during their lengthy relationship, which resulted in a son, Dameko, now aged five. Mr. Dill, she said is badly missed — in particular by his seven children, six remaining siblings and grandmother. The family continues to mourn a double tragedy. Less than a year after his killing, Mr. Dill's sister Ruth Binns was found dead at her Southampton home. A man has been charged with her murder.

Ms Francis said family and friends are dreading having to sit through another court case. "It's hard. It's been a double whammy. This has drained enough out of us and (the next case) will be just as damaging, going from one thing to the next," she said. Meanwhile, Andrina Smith is on remand in jail, and will appear before the Supreme Court again in April when a sentencing date will be discussed.
