The first female Mayor of St. George's has been honoured in Canada for her outstanding accomplishments and success.

Lois Perinchief was one of nine alumni to be honoured at Albert College in Belleville, Ontario on September 29 at the school's 150th anniversary alumni reunion celebration.

Ms Perinchief was born and raised in St. George's and left the Island to attend Canada's oldest, coeducation boarding school, Albert College.

Ms Perinchief has been described as a woman of firsts. She served as Common Councillor on the St. George's Corporation in 1968, became Alderman in 1979 and was the first Bermudian female to serve as Mayor of St. George's in 1997.

She is also the first woman to be appointed director of the Bermudian National Bank Limited and the first female director of Bank of Butterfield Executive and Trust Co. in 1986.

Assistant head of school Kristopher Churchill said: "Our 150th anniversary was a fitting time to begin honouring esteemed alumni. Former Albert students are quite literally scattered around the globe. Our alumni have lead such interesting and meaningful lives, from professional actors to research scientists, authors to CEOs, and accomplished politicians to world-class rugby players, our graduates have impacted the world in many positive and meaningful ways. With over 250 alumni from Bermuda on our rolls, it was fitting that we induct an accomplished individual like Lois Perinchief. She continues to be a terrific ambassador for Albert College, a role model for woman everywhere and an outstanding community-minded Bermudian".

Albert College has 330 students and is a school with high academic achievement offering education to students from over 25 countries in junior kindergarten to grade 12.
