Friends mourn Bermudian teen killed in US car crash
A Bermudian teenager died in a car accident in Pennsylvania. Condolences have poured onto a website set up to remember Timothy Madeiros, who died on October 19 at the age of 15.
Timothy, known as Tim, lived in Bermuda as a young child before moving to the US with his parents Timothy Sr. and Kathleen Ricca Madeiros and sisters Amy and Ashley. He returned to Bermuda every summer to spend six weeks with his extended family on the Island.
Tim, of Cumberland County, and his friend Ethan Gunnell died when the Toyota Corolla they were in lost control and hit another car. The boys were returning from soccer practice with three other teammates when the accident happened. The other boys were not seriously injured in the accident.
Tim was a 10th grade student at the Cumberland Valley Christian School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and played soccer and basketball.
He was a 2007 First Team MDCC All Star soccer player and played for the Hagers-town Revolution. He was also a member of the Christian Bible Fellowship Church.
More than 150 messages about Tim and Ethan have been placed on a website dedicated to their memory.
Fifteen-year-olds Tiffany Sousa and Brittany Ricca live in Bermuda and are Tim's first cousins. On the website they wrote: "We remember the sleepovers — all trying to squeeze in one bed. We remember Brittany always upset because he never wanted to marry her in our game of house. It was always Tiffany...
"Tim's hair is a whole new story. We hated that big Afro but that Tim always gotta be different."
The girls also spoke of meeting the other young man who died in the crash, Ethan, when they went to Pennsylvania for a family wedding.
"The wedding was the best trip we have been on. [Tim and Ethan] were inseparable. We didn't know Ethan for that long but what we did know was that he was a great cutie. He always had a smile on his face.
"We miss you two boys and we hope that everyone tries to be happy to celebrate their lives, as hard as it is we know that Tim and Ethan would not want anyone upset."
Ethan also joined Tim for his annual summer holiday on the Island in 2006.
Brittany's mother Lisa Ricca said the family members are flying to Pennsylvania on Thursday and that a service will be held at Tim's school.
"They were amazing boys,"she said. "The one thing that is getting us through this is that they are Christian families and know their sons have gone to a better place.
"Another thing that has come out of this is that Tim has taught us to live life to the fullest because tomorrow is never promised to anyone."
Tim had many relatives in Bermuda including his paternal grandparents Joel and Jane Madeiros and maternal grandmother Betty Compagnon, as well as uncles and aunts Keith and Laurie Madeiros, Paul and Antoinette Madeiros, Jennifer Smith, Richard and Deanna Smith, David and Vicki Sousa, Richard Ricca, and Yvonne Ricca. Dozens of Tim's cousins also live on the Island.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Timothy C. Madeiros, Jr. Memorial Fund at Cumberland Valley Christian School, 600 Miller Street, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania 17201. Online condolences can be expressed at www.foglsanger-brickerfuneralhome.com.
