Gibbings murder: Nobody charged

Richard Gibbings

Police have still charged nobody over the murder of Marcus Gibbings — ten weeks after the Trinidadian was found stabbed to death in his apartment.

The victim’s father Richard Gibbings yesterday said he remained determined to carry out his own investigation into the killing by flying to Bermuda from his Trinidad home.

He will be making his journey later this month, when he will speak face-to-face with his son’s friends and Police officers to try to piece together what happened.

The body of Marcus Gibbings, 32, was discovered in the flat in Derwent Road, Devonshire, on Thursday, October 26. Police believe the killer deliberately targeted Mr. Gibbings and attacked him with a bladed weapon.

Officers say they have sent a number of items to Florida, America, for forensic tests and are currently awaiting the results. Police would not comment further on the nature of the tests.

“I spoke to Police again, and they said they had not received the results of tests they had sent to be done,” said Mr. Gibbings.

“All I know is that some tests were being done - I don’t know what that means.

“Later in the month, I will be coming over to Bermuda to try to sort a couple of things out. I want to see Police officers and meet all Marcus’ friends.

“I want to sit down and have a chat with them, try to see what happened that night - do my own checking. I need to find a couple of answers. I want to know exactly what happened and how it happened.”

Mr. Gibbings said the grieving family had endured a difficult Christmas and New Year period and hoped his trip to Bermuda would ultimately make life easier.

“It was sad,” he said. “I guess there’s nothing much we can do about what happened. We just have to get over it.

“The family pulled through - they will be all right. I guess they have questions like I do. That’s why we hope to get our answers.”

Police yesterday said there was no further progress to report since their last press conference, in November, when it was announced two people were on bail in connection with the case but nobody else had been charged.

Mr. Gibbings has previously accused the Police investigation of being slow-going. He wrote to the Trinidad and Tobago Government about the matter in November, alleging officers ignored information about a possible suspect.

However, he later accepted the case was going to take longer than he had hoped.

Police have previously revealed Mr. Gibbings Jr. was allegedly involved in an altercation in the weeks leading up to his death. They appealed for a man who was said to have been arguing with the victim in the City of Hamilton to come forward.

Mr. Gibbings Sr. maintains his son was a “happy-go-lucky” individual who would walk away from trouble.

One person, understood by The Royal Gazette to be a woman, was arrested in connection with the murder in November before being released on bail.A 59-year-old man was arrested for obstructing the Police investigation. He was also released on bail.Anybody who saw anything suspicious in the area of Derwent Lane, Roberts Avenue or Glebe Road, in Devonshire, should contact the investigation team at 299-4239 or Crimestoppers on 1-800-63-8477.
