Gwyneth Rawlins stumps for PLP
Gwyneth Rawlins walked away from her role as chairwoman of the UBP in January claiming a white elite still ruled the party.
Last night she graced the screens at a PLP rally and denounced her former party and sang the praises of Premier Ewart Brown. Ms Rawlins, who tried unsuccessfully to become an Opposition Senator three times, believed that her efforts within the UBP were thwarted or ignored because she would not allow others to control her.
She said: "I would not allow them to manipulate me. I was not the typical UBP black person and in my opinion the typical UBP black is someone they can control.
"While the UBP are saying that they have changed, I don't believe them. Evidence by my experience in the UBP I don't think they are any different than they were in the 1960s.
"The UBP is steeped in white support and my experience is that the whites in that party want to maintain the control that they were used to enjoying.
"And while they are saying they are new and different and brining in blacks, I am totally convinced the blacks were brought in to colour the external landscape, but the internal landscape remains the same, and are whites who in my opinion wanted to maintain control.
"The blacks were there to allow the electorate and voting public to feel that they were there to embrace blacks."
Speaking of the PLP leader Dr. Brown she said: "We have a very unique leader in Dr. Brown, who is strong, who is not afraid to speak his mind, who is not afraid to tell it like it is. But I also see a compassion and an urgency about equality in this country. I personally like Dr. Brown. I don't see an arrogance about him. What I do see is a determination, a confidence that Bermuda will finally be put on the right track."
