Immelman pips Tiger to Bermuda slot

Trevor Immelman of South Africa smiles after putting on the green jacket following winning the 2008 Masters golf tournament .

Trevor Immelman last night pipped Tiger Woods to become the first competitor eligible for this October's PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

The 28-year-old became the first South African to win the US Masters in 30 years, surviving a double-bogey at the 16th hole to go on to defeat the world number one with a three-shot victory.

Tickets go on sale today for the 26th Grand Slam of Golf - to be held at the Mid Ocean Club from October 13-15. Bermuda hosted the tournament for the first time last year. Up to 7,000 people - a tenth of the Island's population, travelled to Tucker's Town to watch Angel Cabrera, Padraig Harrington, Zach Johnson and Jim Furyk fight it out on the fairway.

The PGA Grand Slam sees the winners of the sport's four majors compete in a 36-hole showdown for the title 'Champion of Champions'. The champions are the winners of the Masters; the US Open Championship (June 12-15); the British Open Championship (July 17-20); and the PGA Championship (August 7-10).

The tournament will open with a Champions Clinic, where fans can watch the players demonstrating their skills, and a Pro-Am.
