Man charged over road death

Charged: Shuja Amon Muhammad has been charged with the manslaughter of David Ellis.

A man has been charged with the manslaughter of David Ellis, 36, who died after being found in the road with serious head injuries.

Shuja Amon Muhammad, 33, is said by prosecutors to have unlawfully caused Mr. Ellis' death on April 8 through gross negligence.

The defendant, of Store Lane, Sandy's, did not have to enter a plea during a brief appearance before Magistrates' Court yesterday morning because the matter must be dealt with at Supreme Court.

No details of the alleged circumstances were given during the hearing by Senior Crown Counsel Carrington Mahoney.

However, he said afterwards that it is believed Muhammad was riding a motorbike with Mr. Ellis as pillion passenger at the time.

Police released few details about the death last month, saying only that the victim was discovered on the ground at Tween Walls, Sandys, around 12.45 a.m on April 3.

He died in hospital five days later, becoming the fourth road fatality of the year.

This newspaper understands that Mr. Ellis, a former Bermuda Institute student, lived overseas and was visiting the Island. He was married to Kim, also 36.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo granted Muhammad $10,000 bail and ordered him to return to court on May 29 for an administrative hearing.
