Man jailed for three years for throwing drugs over prison wall

A man who threw cocaine and cannabis over a prison fence was sentenced to three years at the facility yesterday.

Alvone Maybury, 21, admitted to throwing two red socks containing alcohol, cocaine, cannabis and a cell phone over the Westgate prison fence in Sandys on September 20.

The socks contained one gram of cocaine and 10 grams of cannabis.

Crown counsel Paula Tyndale told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner Police were notified about the incident after a prison officer saw Maybury on a security camera with another unidentified youth.

The Police found Maybury when the bike he was on crashed into their vehicle at the entrance of Moresby Plain, Sandys.

In mitigation defence lawyer Kenrick James said the young man had lost both parents by the time he was 16 and had spent years in Government care as a result.

"He seems to have had some hard knocks at a young age," Mr. James said. "However he is at a juncture and realises that he must change his life.

"He is joining the Bermuda Regiment because he realises he needs the structure. He also has a young child who is turning one in December and he must provide for his family."

At the time of the offences Maybury was serving a two-year suspended sentence for assaulting the mother of his child.
