Mayor to issue statement today on allegations

The Mayor of Hamilton is today set to release a statement over allegations by rebel aldermen and councillors that he was involved in electoral interference.

Sutherland Madeiros received a letter signed by rebel members of the Corporation of Hamilton last week, calling for him to resign.

The letter stated Mr. Madeiros, who has responsibility for the city’s $20 million budget, compromised the Corporation’s mayoral election in October by getting the election rules changed.

It alleged the move placed his opponent, former Deputy Mayor Sonia Grant, at a disadvantage.

Mr. Madeiros has previously told The Royal Gazette <$>he had read the letter but would not resign and would not “admit anything I’m not guilty of”.

Last night, he said: “I’m going to put a written statement together tomorrow. This is an important issue.”

Mr. Madeiros declined to comment further until the statement is released.

Last month, Miss Grant launched a legal bid to have the vote declared void. She said there was an “avalanche of irregularities” relating to the poll that saw Mr. Madeiros become Mayor.

The Corporation rebels — aldermen David Dunkley and William Black, and councillors Carvel Van Putten, George Grundmuller, Courtland Boyle and Graeme Outerbridge — were supporters of Miss Grant.

It is understood the accusation centres around the fact that businesses, associations and partnerships were allowed to change the name of the nominee registered to vote on their behalf after the October 26 election date was announced — a practice not normally carried out.

Mr. Madeiros, who was an alderman at the time, said he did not ask for the election rules to be changed nor had the power to get them changed.
