<Bz27>Motorcyclist dies more than a month after crash
A motorcyclist has died more than a month after suffering serious injuries when crashing his vehicle into a wall.
Llewellyn Nisbett, 36, of Sandys, is the first fatal road accident victim of 2007.
Mr. Nisbett had been attempting to negotiate a bend in the road when he lost control of his bike and collided with the wall on Friday, November 24, last year, Police say.
He received severe head and upper body injuries in the accident, which happened as he was travelling east on Happy Valley Road, Pembroke.
He was immediately taken to the intensive care unit of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital but his condition was deemed so serious he was airlifted overseas for further treatment.
Police yesterday revealed Mr. Nisbett had died at the overseas hospital on Wednesday. The identity of the hospital has not been revealed. Officers are continuing to investigate the crash and have re-appealed for any witnesses to get in touch.
There were 13 road traffic fatalities in 2006 — exactly the same number as in 2005. The last time Bermuda suffered more road deaths in one calendar year was 1998, when 17 lost their lives.
Last year’s final victim was popular motocross rider Aaron Pace, 29, from Devonshire, who was riding on South Road, Devonshire when his motorcycle crashed into a stone wall on Friday, December 29, at about 9.50 a.m.
Police and paramedics arrived to find Mr. Pace’s body in the road and his motorcycle a few yards away.
Mr. Pace’s death took the total number of deaths to 98 in a ten-year period. The rising number of fatalities sparked a statement from Premier and Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown, who urged road users to exercise caution and travel within the speed limit.
Earlier this week, Police echoed Dr. Brown’s advice by urging drivers to take extra care. They said more than 100 drivers had been caught in a Boxing Day blitz on rogue drivers — but fear many would rather risk getting caught and paying a fine than cut their speed.Police have made no suggestion that Mr. Nisbett was speeding.
Anybody with information about Mr. Nisbett’s accident should telephone P.c. Tricia Rose on 299-4538.
