MP Glenn Blakeney speaks on his son's arrest
MP Glenn Blakeney urged the public to cooperate with Police during investigations as he opened up about his son's arrest.
In an emotional interview Tuesday Mr. Blakeney recounted how Police arrived at an apartment on his premises in Pembroke around 4.30 a.m. last Friday and knocked down a door.
They arrested a 22-year-old in connection with the Christmas shootings and a 26-year-old for suspicion of possessing controlled drugs with intent to supply.
The 26-year-old is Mr. Blakeney's son — though his name has not been released. During the HOTT 107.5 radio interview Mr. Blakeney also hit out at broadcast reports which showed pictures of his home. He said there was no need to show those pictures and added it could have put his family in considerable danger.
Speaking of the arrest he said: "The person they were looking for happened to be there and was arrested and when they were searching they found reason to arrest my son. The Police acted extremely professionally.
"They said the main reason they were there was to apprehend an individual that was at the house, not someone that lives there. I do not know the individual. That is the 22-year old they referred to.
"They told me that they wanted him for questioning. During the course of their thorough search they found reason to arrest both of them. Interestingly enough between a 24, 36, 48 hour period they were released of their recognisance."
Mr. Blakeney, who won the Devonshire North Central seat in the December election, said his family fully cooperated with the Police, who he believed acted in a courteous and professional manner when arresting his son and the other individual.
"We are in a very serious time. The Police have to do what they are empowered to do. I encourage people who might be effected by that to just be right in cooperating. If Police are going about their business in a professional way I do not believe there is any harm in that, if you are innocent you will have your day in court and if you are guilty you will be at the mercy of the court. I encourage people to be cooperative."
The only issue Mr. Blakeney had with the incident was how it was handled by broadcast media, which ran images of his home while reporting the story.
"It could have put my family in real danger," he said.
The names of the individuals arrested have not been released by Police. Mr. Blakeney did not say who it was but added that his son Glenn, the cricket player, who not the one arrested.
Mr. Blakeney appeared on his station's mornings talk show run by Sen. Thaao Dill. Mr. Blakeney is one of the owners of the station.
