Not such easy riders

Bikers from the States planning a ride across the Island with locals were left disappointed yesterday after their cruise ship was diverted due to a medical emergency.

Bermuda Long Riders Motorcycle Club (BLRMC) had planned to welcome 23 tourists and their big bikes from a motorcycle-themed cruise onboard the Explorer of the Seas, which was due to reach Dockyard yesterday morning.

But the journey from Somerset to St. George's and back again was called off after the Explorer dropped Bermuda from its route. Event organiser Kevin Watson said the ride would be rearranged for a later date.

Last May, 31 North American bikers on cycles with engines up to 1,600cc from the Explorer were allowed to cruise the Island's roads with BLRMC. Motorbikes here are usually restricted to an engine size no bigger than 150cc.

A duty officer at Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre said the Royal Caribbean International cruise ship was due in yesterday morning for a one-day visit but had cancelled.
