Our energy future: Wind turbines
If you don't like the idea of nuclear power plants and worry about pollution caused by fossil fuel based energy sources such as oil and coal — consider wind turbines.
Currently, few Bermuda homes have them but as the oil squeeze hits people's wallets more are taking a look at utilising the wind to generate energy for their homes.
Robin Gray doesn't have a wind-powered system but he's currently waiting on one to be shipped in for his home. Mr. Gray has extensive knowledge in installing wind turbines.
He emphasised he is mainly focused on vertical axis wind turbines for household use.
He explained: "This system has pure moving parts and it makes no noise." The costs can be from just under $10,000 to install up to $50,000, noted Mr. Gray, but he pointed out that for most people the use of wind turbines is mostly a cost-cutting measure and not a substitute for the electric grid — which would be more expensive.
"What I'm talking about is referred to as 'grid-tied'. The power system is connected to your house and the BELCO power grid, so if you don't use all of your electricity you can sell portions of it back to the electric company."
