Passing the torch at BHS
Old and young came together to perform the annual torch ceremony at Bermuda High School for Girls on April 24.
The tradition sees former students of the private school return to pass a torch to current pupils — a symbol of wisdom being passed down through generations.
School spokeswoman Judy Motyer said the ceremony had been held each year since 1937. "Students and old girls stand in a spiralling circle in the courtyard and each person, from the oldest old girl down to the youngest student touches the torch as it is carried past," she said.
"The ceremony is conducted in complete silence and is immediately followed by a reading of The Torchbearers by Alfred Noyes."
This year Margret Heyliger carried the torch past her fellow old girls before passing it to Linda Parker, head of school, who passed it to head girl Carolita Joseph.
