Premier Brown meets students in the US

The Premier spent the weekend travelling to two American states, visiting Bermudian university students in Atlanta, Georgia and Huntsville, Alabama.

The trip is part of Premier Ewart Brown’s tour to reconnect with overseas students. Earlier this month he was in Washington, D.C.

On Friday night Dr. Brown went to Atlanta where the students were treated to a reception and dinner at the Westin Peachtree Hotel.

Premier Brown and Education Minister Randy Horton met with students one on one before dinner was served.

At the end of the evening the Premier took questions from the group where the topics ranged from Club Med to immigration, scholarships and Southlands — according to the Premier’s Press Secretary. The Premier said: “Another exciting exchange with our students. I was happy that we could establish that the Government expects as much of the students as the students expect of the Government.

“The future of Bermuda will be in good hands if these students are a reflection of the future leadership of Bermuda.”

On Saturday morning the Premier was at the Madison Mission Seventh-day Adventist Church in Huntsville. Bermudian Preacher and physician Dr. Stanley James was the guest speaker during the worship and was also the keynote speaker at a gathering of students later the same day.

The Huntsville students were similarly treated to a reception and dinner at the Embassy Suites Hotel.

Following that event, Minister Horton said: “It was apparent that a very high percentage of young people are studying education and I was particularly happy with the involvement of young men.

“I believe what we got was a message from young people committed to improving education.”

Besides education the students talked to Government leaders about sustainable development, tourism and career opportunities in Bermuda.

There are two more stops in Canada for the Premier’s university tour — Halifax, Nova Scotia and Toronto, Ontario. He’s expected in Halifax later this week.
