Premier to address youth issues in Somerset tonight
A bid to revive a youth community club in the West End to provide a focal point and direction for local youth has caught the attention of Premier Dr. Ewart Brown.
Along with members of Cabinet he plans to attend a church hall public meeting in Somerset this evening to find out more.
The idea, first reported in the Royal Gazette last month, has already won support from the likes of Bermuda’s former English League footballer Clyde Best, former PLP Government minister Michael Scott and UBP deputy leader Jon Brunson.
Now Dr. Brown and other ministers have requested a further public meeting so they can come along and hear the big idea for themselves and size up the level of interest amongst local people.
That has been arranged for 7 p.m. this evening at the AME Church Allen Temple on Sound View Road.
A group of young men from the West End who missed out on having a youth club when the former club closed down in 1999 are behind the drive to create a new facility for today’s youth.
And they want to see every parish on the Island be given a youth club. The West End Youth Community Club committee, guided by former youth club operator Gerald Fubler, is pushing for a club to be established again in the West End to give young people a constructive and positive outlet and lead them away from the temptation of crime and drugs.
A well-supported meeting in mid-November gathered support from locals and a number of MPs. Bermuda’s star footballer Clyde Best was one of those who spoke in favour of the idea.
The former West End Youth Club at Daniel’s Head ran from 1994 until 1999.
Makai Dickerson, chairman of the West End Youth Community Club, said he was encouraged by the interest shown by the Premier.
He said the meeting will recap what has gone before and give additional information. Mr. Dickerson added: “We should have young people from all walks of life there. The Premier wants to sit with them and listen.
“I think it is going to be positive. He seems to want to get in there and help us and I feel in the new year we may see some reaction.”
All are welcome to attend this evening’s meeting.
