An eye-catching image designed by a ten-year-old schoolgirl on a computer is to become the new logo of Bermuda Health Council (BHeC).

Anise McKay’s colourful creation was yesterday picked from almost 200 entries as the winner of a competition to design the logo, which will grace letterheads, business cards and the council’s website. The Warwick Academy student was presented with a certificate and $400 for her efforts at a ceremony at BHeC’s Hamilton headquarters.

“I feel very proud of myself and excited,” she said. “I started doing a bunch of drawings and sketches. I got upset and my mom explained what a logo really was. After that I went on the computer and I designed it.”

The youngster was among 197 pupils aged between eight and 18 from 13 schools who took part in the content. Anise won the primary and middle school category and was named overall winner.

The winner of the secondary school and college category was Milena DeMoraes, 14, from Berkeley Institute. George Skater, 16, from Berkeley was second in that category and Conor Smith, ten, and Hayley Smith, ten, both of Warwick Academy, came joint second in the primary and middle school section. Ryan Raynor, 16, from Berkeley, and Aline Bouton, an 18-year-old Belgian exchange student at Mount St. Agnes Academy, were given honourable mentions.

Dr. Michael Bradshaw, chairman of the council, which regulates health services on the Island, said the winners were chosen with the help of professional artists.

“We are pleased with the number of entrants, the overall quality of submissions and the variety of interpretations of our guidelines by the students,” he said. “Our new logo will help to give the Bermuda Health Council a consistent visual representation.”
