Shadow Minister calls for more 'oversight' on ferries
The Shadow Transport Minister, last night, called for Government to reassure the public after a fast ferry pilot pleaded guilty to drunk driving when he crashed the vessel into a dock.
Repeated questions to Premier Dr. Ewart Brown, the Minister of Tourism and Transport, for public reassurance through his press secretary, Glenn Jones, and the Department of Communications since Monday, have remained unanswered.
Bob Richards, Shadow Minister of Transport, last night said the crash into the Rockaway Ferry terminal was an unfortunate incident and ironic that is was with J.L. Cecil Smith — named for one of the most sober and model pilots.
Mr. Richards, who grew up taking the ferry regularly and as the Shadow Minister of Transport said last night checks needed to be implemented.
He said: "We really need to have some oversight on these pilots so that passengers are safe and assured. I don't know if that means breathalyser tests but something needs to be done by Government before it happens again."
Mr. Richards also raised the concern that with faster ferries than ten years ago, far more damage could happen if they are not run properly.
