Shooting manhunt stretches to Florida
The hunt for a teenager wanted for questioning over the Alabama shooting of Bermudian Gregory Armstrong has stretched to Florida.
Montez Holt — a suspect over a separate gunfire incident minutes before Mr. Armstrong was shot — has been on the run from Alabama Police since last Friday.
Officers yesterday revealed they believe Holt, 19, could now have escaped to Alabama’s neighbouring state Florida, where he could be harboured by relatives or friends.
It is believed Holt is armed with a gun and he is described by Police as dangerous.
Mr. Armstrong, 22, is still believed to be in a critical condition in Huntsville Hospital, where he is said to be recovering slowly from a gunshot wound to his left upper abdomen.
Police say he was shot after two burglars burst into his apartment shortly after 9 p.m. on Monday, January 15.
They would like to speak to Holt in connection with Mr. Armstrong’s shooting, but stress he is not a suspect for that offence.
However, the teenager is a suspect over another gunfire incident in the same street minutes earlier, which left a 20-year-old man injured.
Officers say somebody shot into the victim’s car, causing him to get hit in the eye and left hand by shattered glass.
They went to arrest Holt on Friday night, but he fled in a vehicle and led them on a high-speed chase through Alabama.
Reports say officers chased him across town until his tyre blew out in the nearby city of Triana, at which point Holt escaped on foot.
Up to 40 officers, as well as a helicopter using heat seeking technology, spent Friday night searching for Holt without success. It is understood officers in Florida are now working together with their Alabama counterparts in the search.
Huntsville Police Department spokesman Wendell Johnson said last night: “We think Holt could be in Florida because he has ties or connections there. We’ve got no details about he could have got there — he could have gone by car, plane or bus.
“There are no further leads in the case. Holt is the one we want to speak to for questioning.”
