Three scholars were awarded $60,000 in scholarships in the name of a man who devoted his life to Bermuda.

The Nicholl Scholarships are given in remembrance of Albert E. Nicholl or "Nicky" who arrived in Bermuda from England in 1917 after World War I as Chief Examination Officer of the Royal Navy Reserve at St. George's.

In his will, he left the majority of his estate in a trust to provide scholarships to young Bermudians who will study either at universities in the British Commonwealth or in the United States.

Even before his death, however, Mr. Nicholl established scholarships at Dellwood, the Berkeley Institute and Saltus to enable students to obtain a secondary education.

He also donated toward a maternity wing to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, which he dedicated to the memory of his father, Sir Edward Nicholl, who was a member of the House of Commons in the UK for two terms.

Continuing in the tradition of Lieutenant Nicholl this year are Christine A. Mayor, Jonathan C. McBeath and Kristina S. Gibbons who each received a scholarship worth $20,000 on Tuesday, July 31 from the Trustees of the Nicholl Scholarships.

Christine plans to pursue her Masters in Drama Therapy at the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University, USA.

Jonathan hopes to attain a Bachelor of Science in Economics with a concentration in Health Care Management at the University of Pennsylvania, USA.

While Kristina plans to declare a double major in French and Foreign Affairs while minoring in Global Culture and Commerce for her Bachelor's degree at the University of Virginia, USA.
