UBP complains to telecoms about alledged Hott 107.5 bias

Shaun Crockwell

The United Bermuda Party has written to telecoms boss Hiram Edwards to allege that "biased" Hott 107.5 radio station has been violating political broadcast directions.

Opposition chairman Shawn Crockwell's letter points to the frequency and objectivity of political adverts and announcements on Hott, whose president is Progressive Labour Party backbencher Glenn Blakeney and morning show presenter is PLP supporter Thaao Dill.

The letter also raises questions over a fund-raising party for Mr. Blakeney for Constituency 13, apparently being hosted by Hott.

Mr. Crockwell's letter to Assistant Director of Telecommunications Mr. Edwards states: "The United Bermuda Party is concerned that radio station Hott 107.5 is not strictly adhering to the Political Broadcasting Directions in the frequency and objectivity of the political ads and announcements currently being aired for the Progressive Labour Party.

"For clarity, let me state that we are not just referring to paid political broadcasts. There is also the general principle in the Political Broadcasting Directions ... which requires that 'undertakings shall ensure that the reporting of news and public affairs is factual, presented objectively and is without political bias'.

"It seems to us that in various discussions on Hott 107.5 this direction is being violated on a regular basis.

"With the election around the corner it is imperative that the broadcasting entities do not demonstrate bias to any one political party. At present we believe that Hott 107.5 is showing clear bias toward the PLP."

The letter expresses concern that the radio station may be breaching the terms of its licence by actively engaging in political fund-raising for Mr. Blakeney's constituency party.

It states: "The Progressive Labour Party is advertising a fund-raiser for one of its candidates at Ocean View Golf Club this Friday with its headline stating that Hott 107.5 is hosting a fund-raising party for Glenn Blakeney for Constituency 13; advertising music, food and asking for a donation of $20.

"Please advise soonest whether the station is or is not in breach of its licence and/or the regulations concerning political broadcast and, if so, what action, if any, is being taken by the Ministry."
