UBP in withering attack on faith-based tourism scheme

Government's refusal to reveal information about its under-fire faith-based tourism scheme came under attack in the House of Assembly last night.

Former United Bermuda Party Leader Grant Gibbons brought up the subject which has been at the centre of controversy for the past few months.

Premier Ewart Brown's political campaigner Andre Curtis is contracted to receive $400,000 to run faith-based tourism in 2007-08 — on top of $200,000 the previous year.

However, neither Mr. Curtis nor Tourism Minister Dr. Brown will reveal how many tourists it has brought to Bermuda or even how many events have taken place. Both deny the initiative is being used as a method for Dr. Brown to get cash to Mr. Curtis as a thank you gesture.

Last night, Dr. Gibbons said: "The running count now is that it's attracting about 100 visitors and yet we have spent well in excess of $600,000. What we do know is it's a very, very large amount for very, very little return so far as I can see."
