Vagrant arrested over rant outside supermarket

A vagrant appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday for using threatening words shortly after he received a suspended sentence for the same offence.

Cannoth William Roberts, 30, of no fixed abode pleaded guilty to using threatening words and using offensive gestures.

On October 24, the defendant was observed standing outside of Arnold’s Supermarket in Sandys. He was asked by a former manager to leave the property. The court heard Roberts had been previously banned from Arnold’s.

As he was leaving, the defendant spat on the entrance door and said: “I’m going to f*** you up. You are a white man’s n***a.

He continued his rant by calling the former manager’s wife a prostitute and a whore.

The Police were called and Roberts was arrested.

In his explanation to Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, Roberts said the reason he lashed out at the former manager was because he felt he was disrespectful to him.

“He always says ‘you black bie’s’. He said to me ‘why don’t you hurry up and die so I can clear the property’. That hit my heart harder that the evilness I was doing.”

When asked why he verbally attacked the former manager’s wife, Roberts said: “His wife was in the car right there with a pom pom. I was being double banged.”

Magistrate Tokunbo told him: “You need to learn to think threatening thoughts rather than speaking them.”

Roberts explained that he is trying to straighten out his life.

The court heard Roberts had been given a six-month suspended sentence on August 30 for the same type of offence. Magistrate Tokunbo activated the sentence and gave him three months for the later charges.

Roberts also had a drug related charge brought to him. He pleaded guilty to possession of a pipe.

On May 21, the defendant was seen on Elliott Street with his shorts covering his head and knees sitting in foetal position. Officers saw smoke coming out of the shirt and heard a sipping sound. Roberts was arrested under the suspicion of drug use.

He received a six-month prison sentence for the drug offence. All sentences will run concurrently.
