Woman fined after she forced an off duty policeman off the road

A woman almost caused an accident by overtaking on a corner while she had a small child unsecured in her car, a court heard.

Charoy Richardson, 29, was caught out when the car she forced off the road turned out to have an off-duty Police officer at the wheel. She pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Magistrates' Court, although she disputed some of the facts set out by Senior Crown counsel Paula Tyndale.

Ms Tyndale told the court the incident happened around 9.16 p.m. on New Year's Day on Kindley Field Road. Richardson overtook the officer, who was in a private car, on the sharp left turn known as "Stonecrusher Corner".

The prosecutor said other vehicles were approaching in the oncoming lane as Richardson executed the manoeuvre in her blue Mazda. "She started veering toward the Police officer's off-side and in order to avoid a potentially fatal collision the Police officer was forced to turn onto the grassed area adjacent to the airport fencing," she told the court.

When the officer spoke to Richardson he saw a small child in the backseat who was not strapped in. Richardson, of Wellington Back Road, St. George's, admitted to overtaking on a corner. However, she said of the rest of the evidence: "I don't know where all that came from," and claimed "yes, I was overtaking on a corner but I could see if anything was coming because it was at a fence."

Richardson explained that she works for a car dealership and needs her license for work, and asked Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner not to ban her from driving. He fined her $400.
