BCB's ex-president's hotel room raided

Bermuda Commercial Bank president Timothy Ulrich

Police raided the Amsterdam hotel room of former Bermuda Commercial Bank (BCB) president Timothy Ulrich, according to reports in the Dutch press.

Mr. Ulrich resigned from the BCB in October along with its chairman, Dutch oil tycoon and banker John Deuss and board member Tineke Deuss. Mr. Deuss, 64, was arrested in Bermuda on October 13 for questioning by Police in his homeland.

He was flown to Holland where he is being quizzed about his First Cura|0xe7|ao International Bank’s alleged involvement in a tax swindle known as carousel fraud which robs governments in Europe of billions of dollars in tax each year. He denies any wrongdoing.

According to a report in the De Telegraaf newspaper, visitors to the up-market Amstel Hotel were shaken to see the detectives raid his hotel room last Wednesday.

“The room was searched and several items were confiscated, among which was his laptop. This information is given by sources close to the investigation,” said the report.

“The American is, after Deuss, the most important man in his worldwide conglomerate of oil companies and banks.”

According to the newspaper, Mr. Ulrich has been in the Netherlands for some weeks for questioning by the judiciary, but has not been charged with any crime.

Mr. Deuss is being held on remand until February.
