CedarBridge re-opens after mould scare

It's been nine weeks since CedarBridge Academy has hosted students, but today the sprawling Prospect campus was officially re-opened for a new school term.

The almost eight-year-old school has undergone a thorough $4 million cleaning after the discovery of mould in some of its buildings.

A handful of teachers have reported illnesses as a result of the infestation. Those educators are not expected back on campus today.

Principal Kalmar Richards greeted students in front of the school as they arrived, most of them already dressed in blue blazers as parts of the school's winter dress code, which officially takes effect on Monday.

Deputy principal Dr. Timothy Jackson said, "It's a great day".

He also came to work early to begin greeting students at about 8 a.m., which ends two months of a school without pupils.

"As a seasoned educator," Dr. Jackson said, "you learn to roll with the punches. You learn to make adjustments when necessary. So it wasn't frustrating."

It may have been more frustrating for the students who were re-assigned to either the old Berkeley Institute or to the Bermuda College.

As many returned Wednesday, they were relieved to be going back to a newer and bigger facility.

"Of course, this is our home," said S1 student Cynarra Phillips. "There is no other place like our home.

"It was very small up there (Berkeley Institute). We didn't have our supplies. It wasn't organised," she said.

"It's much easier to concentrate here," said S2 student Anthony DeCosta. "It's a better learning environment."

CedarBridge administrators and officials from the Ministry of Education are expected to have a press conference Thursday to brief the media on the school's re-opening.
