Emergency meeting of Road Safety Council called

An emergency meeting of the Road Safety Council will be convened this week after two more deaths on the Island's roads.

Responding to the tragedy over the weekend, Senator Wayne Caines said the aim is to "leave no stone unturned when it comes to public safety".

In addition to the deaths of Charles Everett, 30, and Kelvin Quarles, 37, a 23-year-old woman from Paget was last night in a critical condition in intensive care. Her car was involved in a collision in Middle Road, Warwick, early on Thursday morning.

Sen. Caines said: "We will address the issue of the recent spate of road traffic accidents, including the fatalities.

"I would like to put in an immediate action plan for dealing with this."

He expressed deep concern that there have already been six road deaths this year, compared to 13 for the whole of 2007.

"It is time for us to have a critical look at these issues. I want to meet with the Road Safety Council this week, to take a closer look at educating the public and any recommendations to amend legislation.

"We will leave no stone unturned to ensure the message of road safety is getting out to the public and that we have the best action plan going forward," he said.
