First tag day for road victims group is a success

A charity set up to offer comfort and support to the grieving families of road accident victims says its first tag day has been a big success.

ROLO (Remembering Our Loved Ones) organised the fundraiser in Hamilton and St. George's on Friday, to mark the start of Road Safety Week. It followed a week of carnage from April 7 to April14 in which four people were killed — the highest death toll on the Island's roads since the early 1960s, according to Police statistics.

The charity will now use the tag day funds for a National Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, on November 16.

ROLO was initiated last year by the relatives of accident victims to provide comfort and practical advice to grieving families and friends. It aims to set up a counselling service at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and a manual of practical advice. This will feature contact numbers and other information, such as funeral parlour details and where families should go to obtain a death certificate or attend an inquest.

The National Day of Remembrance will commemorate all those who have died on Bermuda's roads in the past ten years, and the charity also aims to erect memorials at designated places in each parish.

ROLO president Angel Nottingham said yesterday: "We had a great response to our tag day, it was a big success.

"We at ROLO would like to express our gratitude to the public for your generous donations and support. We would like to thank the Bermuda Road Safety Council for their assistance in making this day successful. Our sincerest appreciation goes to all of the businesses that granted ROLO permission to tag outside of their establishment. To all of the volunteers, your personal commitment was incredibly helpful and allowed us to reach our goal.

"The funds raised will go toward a National Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, as an appropriate acknowledgement for the victims and their families. We are aiming to host this event annually, starting this year on Sunday, November 16.

"Bermuda, with your continued support we can make a positive change. Remember life is precious — handle it with care."
