Four vehicles involved in high speed crash in Paget

A Police officer was injured and a scooter dragged more than 90 feet under a car after a high-speed chase ended in a four-vehicle smash.

The accident happened on South Shore Road, opposite the Botanical Gardens last night and eye-witnesses spoke of vehicles travelling at blistering speeds.

As well as the officer, it is understood several other people were also injured although the extent of their injuries was not known last night.

One eye witness told The Royal Gazette <$>he was forced to pull over to dodge a collision.

“I was travelling west (along South Shore Road) past the florist and I saw Police lights perhaps a quarter of a mile behind me,” he said.

“Then, out of nowhere, a car, it looked like a reddish car, overtook me. It near missed me, it near missed a car coming in the opposite direction, there was a screeching of brakes. It was travelling at a blistering, stupid speed.

“When I saw him coming I pulled over — if I hadn’t it was going to hit me or the oncoming car, it would’ve been a sandwich. Even so he almost careened off the other one.

“Then, within a matter of moments, there was a whole bunch of bikes in hot pursuit. I got to the Botanical Garden gates and saw that there had been several impacts.”

Three women leaving a dinner party at a nearby house said they had heard a “horrific” thud - and then the sounds of someone running through the bushes, “using a lot of the F-word”.

Details from Police officers were sketchy last night, however it appeared that the car which overtook the eye witness then somehow collided with a bike, dragging the scooter some 90 feet.

Four vehicles were involved in the collision in total: two cars, one bike, and one Police bike. Detective Superintendent Sinclair White confirmed at the scene that the collisions were the result of a high-speed chase, but added that without a full report he could not confirm further details.

“You don’t drive at those speeds, not on these roads,” the eye witness said. “It’s one thing if they want to kill themselves ... He was travelling far too fast, in my opinion, to be able to control the car. It was just a matter of time.”
