Friday is Youth Tourism Day

Hundreds of Bermuda's youth will descend upon Shelly Bay Field on Friday for the Department of Tourism's third annual National Youth Tourism Day (NYTD).

The day has been a tradition during the past two years that sees senior school-aged children gather for an initiative to make them aware of tourism-related careers.

More than 400 youth are expected at the event, along with Bermuda Gombey dancers.

The event is apart of Premier Ewart Brown's vision in involving more youth in the tourism product.

Dr. Brown, who is also Tourism and Transport Minister stated: "The Bermuda Tourism industry is re-emerging all around us and we will need a young and energetic workforce to meet the consistently building demand.

"That's why NYTD is so important — it exposes our young people to an industry which is full of promise.

"I understand we'll have about 400 students this year and I expect that every one of them will learn a lot while also having a good time."

According to organiser Shane Mora, the first hand experience gives students a peak into a vibrant industry which is more than just serving tourists.

Ms Mora, Department of Tourism Events and Product Development manager, said: "We've had great success these past two years in getting Bermuda's children interested in the industry.

"What they've found is that there's so much more in terms of career opportunities, which range from management to accounting, and from marketing to event planning, just to name a few.

"And we're looking forward to this year being another eye-opening success for our young participants."

The activities will kick off with students arriving early in the morning at Shelly Bay Field to begin an 'amazing tourism race'.

Its aim is for them to gain points by visiting tourist locations and obtaining information.

The points garnered by the students will be used to earn prizes.

While on their amazing tourism race for tourism knowledge, the students will also have an opportunity to meet with tourism industry representatives to learn first hand about the career opportunities available in tourism.

To add further excitement, throughout the day, students will be treated to local entertainment.

The Warwick Gombeys will greet the arriving students and during lunch, JaKoMa models will conduct a tourism fashion show followed by United Dance Productions, which will close the day with one of their signature performances.
