Friends plan musical tribute for teacher

Musicians and friends of Toby Colombe, the Canadian physical education teacher who died in a single vehicle motorbike accident in the early hours of Sunday, are holding a tribute night at the Bermuda Folk Club this Saturday.

Proceeds from the evening will be sent to the family of the 33-year-old Mount Saint Agnes Academy teacher, for whom a memorial service is also due to take place at St. Theresa's Cathedral today at 11 a.m.

Mr. Colombe was a regular performer at the monthly Bermuda Folk Club and many of the musicians and singers who appeared alongside him over the past two years during the club's open mic nights are expected to perform at the evening of music at the Spanish Point Boat Club.

A number of students from MSA are also to give their tribute to the popular Newfoundlander during the evening.

Fellow musician and friend Michael MacPhee, who has been arranging the tribute event, said: "Toby loved Newfoundland music and Canadian tunes. He would sometimes be playing his guitar until two in the morning.

"He was a fun-loving, kind-hearted guy who was the life of the party and was loved by a lot of people because of his upbeat personality."

A number of Folk Club performers have already indicated they will take part in Saturday's event, including Joy Barnum.

Mr. MacPhee said he would like to hear from others willing to take part in the night of music. The doors will open at 7.30 p.m. with music from 8 p.m. Money raised from the admission charge of $10 and further voluntary donations will be sent to the family of Mr. Colombe.

It has not yet been decided if the event will be held outside or indoors at the Spanish Point Boat Club.
