Hogges seek successive wins
Bermuda Hogges will be aiming for back-to-back victories on Saturday when we return to action against USL-D2 new boys Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
Like us last season, Riverhounds have found adjusting to the higher level a difficult and demanding one and we must look to take advantage of that.
They've already played four matches this campaign and managed to pick up a good point away at Harrisburg City Islanders last weekend, so we certainly can't underestimate them.
Obviously we're feeling confident after our win against Wilmington Hammerheads but if we go and act like a bunch of pre-Madonna's we will be beaten. We've told the players that they can't afford to start believing they've made it just because they won one match.
To be fair, their attitude, commitment and effort in training has been excellent and since our Hammerheads win there's been a real buzz in the dressing room. They know we've a good chance of posting back-to-back wins when we play Riverhounds.
Ralph Bean has looked very sharp in training this week after recovering from the bruised shoulder he sustained during our match against Charlotte Eagles. We should also have John Barry Nusum back now Philadelphia Kixx's season has finished.
Their return will increase competition for places and a number of players are beginning to realise that they aren't guaranteed a start in games these days. Hopefully they're starting to wonder whether they will be able to hold down a starting position for the entire season - that's a really healthy position for the team to be in because it's important to create a competitive environment.
All the players seem really upbeat since returning from the national team's UK training trip. I think they found the whole experience a real eye-opener, especially the Chelsea match.
It was a great experience for them to taste and feel what it's like to train at top-flight facilities and play against top-class players. I've had a chat with technical director Derek Broadley and he said he was very impressed with the performances of the players and the trip bodes well for our World Cup qualifiers against Trinidad and Tobago.
I think all the players were left quite stunned by how professional some of Chelsea's 17 and 18 year old players were. The feedback I've received from the Hogges' national team guys is just how impressed they were by Chelsea's one and two touch football, as well as their off the ball work-rate.
I've always thought Bermudian players overlook the importance of off the ball work and it's all very well working hard when your team has possession.
Hopefully our victory over Hammerheads will encourage a few more new faces to come down to the National Sports Centre on Saturday night. We're trying to create a unique experience and I believe we are beginning put on a first-rate event.
I encourage those fans who watch their local teams play in the domestic league to come and support their local players in a professional league. It's a different sort of experience and one I believe they will really enjoy.
We know a winning team is a well-supported team and we'll be doing the utmost to keep our side of the bargain. I want the Hogges to shatter the USL-D2's attendance record some time soon and I believe that's a realistic achievement.
Hogges take on Pittsburgh Riverhounds at the NSC at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
