Mayor hasn't seen St. George's station plans
St. George's Mayor Mariea Caisey has yet to see plans from Government for revamping the St. George's Police Station, plans she would have to approve before work can begin.
Ms Caisey said she has not been made aware of any updates for work to begin on the Police Station, which was closed January 2, 2007, despite Sen. David Burch, Minister of Works & Engineering, claiming the station would be up and running in the next few months if the PLP were elected.
Ms Caisey, also chairman of the Preservation Committee, said work cannot begin without approval of the committee and the Corporation of St. George's as it is a listed building even though Hustle truck workers began some work before the new year.
She said Works & Engineering have to submit fully drawn up plans to the committee and the Corporation and then both groups would have to approve that the plans are in keeping with the preservation of the building. She also said the committee and Corporation meet once a month so plans would have to be submitted before the monthly meetings.
During the seven-week election campaign, the UBP candidate for St. George's North in the General Election, Kenny Bascome, pledged on November 14 his party would renovate and reopen the station and pump more money into the town.
In addition, he pledged there would be 24-hour-a-day, seven days a week Police presence in the town.
Days later on November 19, Public Safety Minister David Burch claimed the cockroach and termite-infested Police station would be revamped and opened 24 hours a day within months.
He said the building would be gutted and cleaned out to provide a full-time base for officers for the first time since it was down at the beginning of 2007.
At the time, Works & Engineering Building Surveyor Dennis Reid said it was too early to predict exactly when the station would reopen because he had only been contacted about the project four days before Sen. Burch's announcement.
However, he said he was hopeful the work could be completed within three months.
The Royal Gazette visited the St. George's Police Station on the following days and times over the past week: last Wednesday at 4.30 p.m., Thursday at 1 p.m., Friday at 9 a.m. and Monday at 12.30 p.m.
There was no sign that any work is being done or had even began.
Ms Caisey was also asked if she had any updates of when work would begin at the old Club Med property.
She said the last time she had heard anything about it was the same time as everyone else, from the newspaper.
"The way I look at it is, I'd rather they take their time instead of rushing into it. I'm trying to be patient.
I'm positive it will come because the Premier promised it. It's a big undertaking and I hope they dot their i's and cross their t's."
This newspaper sent Sen. Burch requests this week asking him for updates on both work at St. George's Police Station and on developments with regard to the former Club Med property.
At press time last night, Sen. Burch had yet to respond to these inquiries.
