Mayor seeks to ease fears as Police station closes during revamp

Mayor of St. George’s Mariea Caisey has been reassured the town will have an adequate Police presence during the time that its Police station is closed for renovations.

The station is undergoing renovation work and officers and staff are now based at a former US Naval Air Station in Southside until Works and Engineering workers complete the lengthy renovations to bring the station up to standard.

The Southside facility will be manned 24 hours-a-day and from it officers will go out on patrol, including visits to St. George’s.

Mayor Ms Caisey, said: “I want the people of St. George to know that we have had several meetings with Inspector Martin Weekes in the latter part of last year and he has kept us abreast on the movement of the St. George Police Station. “I think St. George will make out better because what used to happen was the officers would come on duty at the station and drive out of town on patrol.

“Now they are going to be driving into town on patrol and Insp. Weekes wants to have some foot patrols also.”

Ms Caisey said that from conversations with the inspector she had been informed he would like to have two more foot patrol officers for the town.

“He said he would be doing foot patrols and as soon as they see fit they will be back to open the Police Station,” said Ms Caisey.

“I’m adamant that we will be better served by the Police while they go through this transition.”

And of the need to renovate the station, she added: “The building has been condemned for some time now.”

Anyone needing Police assistance can visit Southside Police Station at the old number two gate of the former US Naval Air Station. The building is blue-green and marked as a Police Station. The direct telephone number is 293-2222.
