Regiment fly off to Jamaica on Saturday
A total of 215 Regiment soldiers head to Jamaica on Saturday for annual training that will see them battle "international terrorists" during an exercise.
According to Training Officer and Second-in-Command Major Brian Gonsalves: "Our training objectives include battle procedure and the orders process through which we will test passage of information and command and control. While there is a focus on junior leadership and small unit tactics, we anticipate that senior ranks will further develop their man-management and leadership skills also."
Joining the soldiers at Moneague Camp, home of the First Battalion, The Jamaica Regiment of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), will be five members of the Bermuda Police Service and two Emergency Medical Technicians from the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service.
Also participating will be ten soldiers from the 3rd Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment from the United Kingdom, with whom the Bermuda Regiment is affiliated.
The Jamaica trip will also see other units focus on areas including explosives handling, maritime security and emergency care and treatment. Outside of the military training, the soldiers will take on a local team at football and attend a church service.
They will spend a brief break in the resort town of Montego Bay before returning to Bermuda on May 3. Among the VIPs set to visit them in Jamaica are Governor and Commander in Chief of the Regiment Sir Richard Gozney, Premier Ewart Brown and Minister of Public Safety David Burch.
