Robber imprisoned for one year
David Robinson, 21, Knapton Hill, Smith's admitted to assaulting a 70-year-old woman in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
The court heard from Crown counsel Michael McColm that Robinson, a call dispatcher for Radio Cabs, drove his unlicensed, uninsured motorcycle to The Reefs Resort.
He went into the gift shop and was asked by the sales lady if he needed any help. He requested water and a candy bar.
When the lady opened the cash register, Robinson walked around to the cash register and grabbed the woman by her neck forcing her to fall.
She begged him not to hurt her and he ignored her plea leaving her on the floor crying for help.
Robinson was confronted by hotel staff and tried to get away. The staff restrained him and the Police were called.
When Police arrived, they arrested Robinson to which he just replied "okay". He was taken to Hamilton Police Station.
The sales lady was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where she received treatment for bruises to both arms and her left leg. She had swelling of her knees and knuckles.
Robinson admitted he stole the cash to purchase a new bike.
"I would like to apologise to the court for my actions. It was bad judgment.
"I'm not that type of person to rob anyone and I would like to have the opportunity to apologise to Ms Audrey for what I done," he told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo.
Mr. Tokunbo said: "That wasn't bad judgment, that was calculated and evil to hurt and elderly lady to get a bike."
He was given 12 months imprisonment.
