Rubber ducks, get on your marks
The 12th Annual Rubber Duck Derby kicked off yesterday with a new goal of $160,000 to raise for the Friends of Hospice.
BELCO along with Friends of Hospice launched the derby in BELCO's lobby with representatives from both sides. The derby race will be on Sunday, June 1 at Ordnance Island, St. George's.
Friends of Hospice chairperson Gertie Barker said: "I am so pleased that BELCO has come on board for the 12th consecutive year as our major corporate sponsor for this annual fundraiser. A big thanks to Linda Smith and her team at Belco for their continued generous support."
"Last year, more than $150,000 was raised. This year, our target is $160,000 and with your help I know we can reach that goal."
Ms Barker explained the event provides much needed funding for the hospice's projects including extra amenities for patients, continuing education initiatives for hospice staff, maintenance and insurance for the hospice van, salaries for the chef and charity administrator, refurbishment of the building, ongoing maintenance of the garden and provision of specialist medical equipment.
The derby race also helps to get the message of hospice care out to the public.
On June 1, the race will start at 2 p.m. with food stalls, a kiddie land with a fun castle, games and face painting, baked goods and entertainment. The corporate race starts first at 3 p.m.
Rubber Duck Derby tickets are available at Agape House, Belco, Bermuda Gas and Utility, Bermuda Book Store or call Friends of Hospice at 232-0859.
They will also be available at various grocery stores and other locations throughout May.
The Agape House is open to all persons with terminal illnesses and does not discriminate by age or disease process. The charity offers palliative care to those in need when curative treatment is no longer an option.
