Soldier gets education award

Photo by Glenn TuckerThe Bermuda Regiment and Acadia University are pleased to announce that Bandsman Llewellyn Burgess, Jr. is the first recipient of their joint Education Award.The parents of Llewellyn Miranda and Llewellyn Burgess Sr. were presented the award Thursday morning on the lawn of the Roesdon Hotel by Dr Gail-Gottlieb President of Acadia University and Major Wayne Smith, Speacil Projects Officer of the Bermuda Regiment.

A member of the Bermuda Regiment Band has been awarded the first education award to a Canadian university.

Llewellyn Burgess Jr. has been awarded the Bermuda Regiment/Acadia Education Award, valued at $1,000.

Bandsman Burgess plays the flute in the Bermuda Regiment and is studying biology at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

This is the first time the award has been granted and was the brain child of Maj. Wayne Smith, the Special Projects Officer at the Bermuda Regiment and an Acadia alumnus.

Maj. Smith said: "On behalf of the Bermuda Regiment I am proud to recognise Bandsman Burgess' service in the Regiment and his commitment to further his studies at Acadia."

Bandsman Burgess is in his first year at Acadia University and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree.

The award was presented to Bandsman Burgess' father, Llewellyn Burgess Sr., by visiting Acadia University President Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb.

The Regiment also offers other educational opportunities to its soldiers, including the ADC Education Award and the Bermuda College tuition initiative.
